This winter's sustained cold temperatures have caused extreme frost depth in Northern Minnesota, and that's causing a lot of frozen water lines. The City of Bemidji is reminding residents of the risk and is asking people to check the temperature of their tap water.
In a statement released yesterday, Todd Anderson of the Water Department said that if your tap water is below 35 degrees, you should run a continuous stream the size of a pencil until mid-April. People who do so must call City Hall to report this.
UPDATE: People will not be charged for the extra water used to keep their lines from freezing, as was originally announced. Normal sewer rates will also apply.
